Future City Fourways spreads Madiba magic

FOURWAYS – Future City Fourways was 'putting on a blitz for Mandela' on 16 July.

In their bid to commemorate Mandela Day, the Future City Fourways (FCF) team cleaned up four separate sites on 16 July.

The clean-up consisted of cleaning pavements around Douglasdale Police Station, two stretches of Douglas Drive between Chrisoliet Street and Cedar Drive, and William Nicol Drive outside Fourways Crossing.

FCF is a non-profit organisation comprising concerned residents and businesses which sponsor privatised street-cleaning and maintenance services in the Fourways Central Business District every week.

Susan Mottram of Future City Fourways said, “Future City members and supporters – residents and businesses – worked like an army of industrious ants for three hours, litter picking, sweeping and removing illegal dumping and overgrowth to make Fourways safer and more wholesome, attractive and investable.”

Mottram added that renovation of the verge garden on the corner of Douglas Drive and Witkoppen Road was made possible by a generous donation from Fourways Airconditioning, whose directors and staff joined the clean-up.

Fourways Airconditioning is one of the latest businesses to sign up as a monthly Future City Fourways sponsor. Its ongoing commitment to FCF includes the full sponsorship of two cleaners who are additional to the existing team and who will be dedicated to cleaning stretches of Witkoppen Road around Douglas Drive three times a week and in the area of Malibongwe Drive [North Riding] twice a week, as well as servicing the new Douglasdale verge garden.

Chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum and Future City Fourways member, Jean Berdou said that FCF was amazed, once again, by the community’s efforts in improving the area’s security and cleanliness.

“Young and old from all backgrounds joined together, inspired by the spirit of our beloved Madiba to make a difference in the lives of others, and what an honour it was working with such people,” Berdou said.
