Woman kidnapped and raped by 3 men in false Uber vehicle

MAGALIESSIG – Do you ever check the registration number of the Uber vehicle before you get into it? Read to see why it is important to do so.

A woman was allegedly beaten, raped and left for dead after stepping into a vehicle posing as an Uber taxi at Montecasino.

Community members are advised and warned to be vigilant and to check the Uber’s registration number as it appears on their cellphone before they get into it. This is after various posts were shared on social media which stated that a woman had her life turned upside down on the night of 6 July after getting into what she believed was her Uber outside Montecasino.

It was reported that the woman got into the car and, to her shock, there were two men lying down in the back of the vehicle. The woman was allegedly then tied up, locked in the boot, taken to an ATM and then assaulted and forced to withdraw money. She was taken to a veld in Tembisa and was allegedly raped and left for dead by the three men.

With her horrific experience, the woman wanted community members to be alert and aware of this in a bid to stop it from happening to somebody else.

Communications manager of Uber, Samantha Allenberg said, “This was a despicable crime and, first and foremost, our thoughts are with the victim and her family.

“We are in open dialogue with the family and have offered our full support. We stand ready to assist law enforcement in any way we can to bring this crime to justice.”

Marketing manager of Montecasino, Debbie Combrink said she was deeply upset about the incident. “As a woman, I can only imagine how traumatic this was. For this reason, I urge the community utilising Uber’s services to be aware and use the security measures they have in place to avoid an incident of this nature from happening again.

“My sincerest condolences to the victim and her family.”

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communication for the Douglasdale Police Station, confirmed that a case had been opened and the incident is under investigation.
