Be vigilant when driving in Fourways

FOURWAYS – A Fourways resident speaks about his encounter with a potential criminal and is warning others to be vigilant when stopped at traffic lights in the area.

Community members are advised to be vigilant and exercise caution when driving in and around Fourways.

This after a community member posted on the I Love Fourways Facebook page, warning fellow residents to be wary of a man who allegedly threatened him while he was waiting for a traffic light to turn green on 6 July.

“I was at the robot on the corner of William Nicol Drive and Fourways Boulevard coming from Fourways Mall and was threatened by a man because he claimed I was ignoring him,” the community member said.

He added that he was distracted at the time and did not even notice the man selling newspapers. “The man then told me that he was a big man and had spent a long time in jail and he was willing to go back. He threatened me for roughly five minutes while we waited in traffic,” he said.

“My door was unlocked and my window was down so I never managed to take a picture, but he is roughly six foot, quite built and he was wearing a faded red bucket style hat and a vest.”

“I just thought I should warn community members to keep safe around there, the man clearly seems like a dodgy guy with aggression problems,” he said.

Chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF), Jean Berdou said that the CPF recommends all community members and persons commuting in the Fourways area to exercise usual care by ensuring that they have locked their doors and closed their windows when driving, especially at intersections, which is not unusual as there are many different persons at these intersections.

“At this time, we urge all community members to be vigilant against crime and avoid the opportunity of [having your] car with unlocked doors, open windows, valuables on full display and other signs of vulnerability that criminals feed on. Care and diligence with one’s safety and precaution defeat crime,” Berdou explained.

“Successful crime done by criminals attracts others, but if community members exercise vigilance, they will defeat the criminals and they will then go somewhere else.”

If anybody sees anything suspicious in the area, they are advised to report the matter to the police as soon as possible.
