Blame game in Kya Sands about illegal electricity connections

KYA SANDS – Sparks fly about Illegal electricity connections in Kya Sands.

Harsh words are flying back and forth between Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane and Member of Mayoral Committee Member Matshidiso Mfikoe over the illegal electricity connections in Kya Sands.

Mafokwane lamented the fatalities caused by illegal connections which he blamed on the lack of services to the residents by the City of Johannesburg. “These connections are dangerous and have already cost lives across the city.

“Furthermore, they put an uncontrolled strain on an already overloaded system, thus causing endless outages.”

Mafokwane apportioned the blame to Mfikoe’s administration which, he said, was lacking in the provision of proper services. “It is due to her administration’s lack of providing proper services to these settlements that people resort to illegal connections.

“The MMC must take full responsibility for the lack of controlled services being provided to these desperate people. It is her lack of planning and foresight that has resulted in this situation.

“For years she has been preaching that the city is growing at a rate of 10 000 people per month but she has failed to ensure that basic services are made available to these desperate people that are flocking to the city in search of a better life.”

Mafokwane said Mfikoe, the MMC for Infrastructure and Development, blamed him for the illegal connections when he alerted her to the problem. “… And this is what she said, ‘Wena [you] Matome, you are to blame for the disconnections of those illegal connections in Kya Sands. You don’t listen. You kept pushing and gona nou o re ke etseng ka toi-toi [So now, what am I supposed to do with your guys protesting?]. I am not interested, you asked for it… Now deal with it. Toi-toi ke bothata bja gago [protesting is your problem] Matome. Leave me out of it’,” alleged Mafokwane.

Efforts to get a response from Mfikoe proved futile.
