Healthier bread for Joburg

JOBURG – City to bake more affordable and healthy bread at its own bakeries.

The City of Johannesburg will soon have its own bakeries that will provide residents with bread made from fruit peels that is expected to be more affordable and healthier.

“The healthy bread bakeries will provide healthy alternative bread for our communities,” said communication specialist for the City, Nkosinathi Nkabinde. At this stage, the City did not want to reveal the location of these bakeries, but said different areas within the city of Johannesburg have been identified.

Nkabinde added that the City was busy with renovations at those bakeries and training sessions have been conducted with entrepreneurs and members of co-operatives who were trained on how to bake healthy bread and explore ways in which bread-making projects could be made viable.

Although the City did not want to reveal much about the project at this stage, it is believed that a substantial number of jobs would be created.

Mayor Parks Tau is expected to launch the Joburg Healthy Bread on 14 July in Soweto where more details would be revealed.
