Hijacking victims speak out

DOUGLASDALE - A couple speaks about their terrifying ordeal.

The management team of Pick n Pay Douglasdale has cautioned customers to constantly check their surroundings and to take notice of who is following them.

This comes after a hijacking that occurred outside the store in Lesley Road on 21 May. The victims, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that they were approached by three armed men on the evening of 21 May after they went grocery shopping.

One said, “We didn’t expect anything to happen. After getting our groceries, we headed back to the car. Upon entering our car, one man pointed a gun at my husband, pulled him out of the car and threw him to the ground and the other pointed a gun at me, managing to steal my handbag,” she said.

At that point, one of the victims managed to run away and scream for help. The victims managed to get back into their car and drive off.

Vusi Mavaso, manager of Pick n Pay Douglasdale, explained that Pick n Pay had about six to eight security guards stationed throughout the parking lot from 5.30am to 9pm.

He advised customers to constantly remain vigilant.

A case has since been opened at the Douglasdale Police Station.
