Condolences pour in for renowned showjumper

KYALAMI – Sad news for the showjumping community after well-known showjumper Bill Johnson passes on.

The showjumping community has lost a renowned showjumper, Bill Johnson, who passed away on 30 May at the age of 81.

Messages of condolences have been pouring in for the grieving family on SA Showjumping’s Facebook page.

The cause of death is yet to be confirmed, however, apparently Johnson had fallen off a young horse that he was riding, and was found unresponsive four days later in his bathroom. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

Many equestrians have shared their condolences on the SA Showjumping Facebook page:

Joanne Blanckenberg posted, “A man revered and loved by so many people. He touched each of our lives in different ways, but mostly he taught us to face our fears and have courage to be firm but kind to horses and to appreciate each day. He really was a legend in his own lifetime. His generosity of spirit brightened all of our lives. R.I.P. Bill.”

Tarren McIntyre posted, “An icon and a legend to all equestrians of all ages, all over the world. May your soul rest in peace Bill. Such sad news, condolences to the family.”

Klaus Degener posted, “All sports have a standout character. Showjumping had Bill Johnson, a larger than life legend. I doubt whether there is a rider in South Africa who has schooled and jumped more horses than Bill. Who will ever forget Bill tossing a rose to the ladies in the members stand at the Rand Easter Show, before he commenced his round or when he dressed up in pyjamas to compete in the fancy dress competition at the Epol Indoor Horse Show and described his fancy dress as his ‘other working clothes’. Rest In Peace my friend. Condolences to Sandy and all family members affected by this tragic loss of life.”

Kim McGregor wrote, “So desperately sad. What a legend who touched my life in a very sweet and gentle way, thank you uncle Bill, will remember you with much love. Condolences to Sandy and PJ and all of his family.”
