Good Samaritans of Fourways help octogenarian

DIEPSLOOT - Fourways community members open their wallets for a Diepsloot resident and help him keep warm during the cold season.

Johnson Ndlovu, the 80-year-old from Diepsloot who’s shack burnt down will be sleeping on a bed again, warming himself with six new blankets, all courtesy of Fourways Review which ran a series of stories about his plight.

Ndlovu’s girlfriend, Beatrice Mhlongo, was killed in the fire and all his household goods went up in smoke.

Local DA councillor, Refilwe Mathebula sent out an appeal urging well-wishers to donate anything towards the restoration of Ndlovu’s home.

“The response is overwhelming and I am very grateful to Fourways Review for helping us to reach out to donors who assisted us to rebuild Ndlovu’s life,” said Mathebula.

She said two beds have been donated, adding that she collected four blankets and was expecting two more. Mathebula added that

R3 000 was pledged by the community but urged more people to open their wallets for Ndlovu.

Mathebula said the money would be used to buy him a ready-made shack. Ndlovu also received tables, chairs and a bounty of clothes.

Community members and Mathebula assisted with the burial expenses of Mhlongo who realised that the family was not in a position to afford a decent burial.

Ndlovu, who is still grieving, expressed appreciation to the community for helping him. “Thanks to everyone for their help,” was all he could say when this paper contacted him.
