FOURWAYS - Kaleigh Telfer shoots the lights out of the course to win Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship

Kaleigh Telfer, a pupil at Education Incorporated Boutique School in Fourways, claimed her first Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship title after winning by six strokes at Westlake Kaleigh TelferGolf Club.

Telfer said the course was extremely tough. “I thought the scoring was going to be a lot lower,” she said.

“I thought it would take six-under to win it. But obviously not. The trees [were] a lot closer… On normal parkland courses you’ve got maybe 10m of rough to spare, but there was just fairway and then trees.”

Telfer closed with a tournament low of three-under-par 69 to win on one over par.

Although overwhelmed by winning the championship, the 17-year-old said she had worked very hard. “I’m a little bit speechless. My coach, Stephan Spies and I have been working towards this for a very long time, so I’m just glad it came when it did.”

Telfer is currently studying hard for matric and is looking forward to furthering her studies in the United States next year.

Karen Olivant, president of Women’s Golf South Africa said, “Kaleigh is a deserved champion. She’s come on in leaps and bounds over the last 18 months and her representing South Africa on the international stage has really helped her cope with such a big stage as this.” Olivant added that the competition had 101 entries overall.
