‘Cheap politicking is a waste’

DIEPSLOOT – DA faces garbage accumulation plague in Diepsloot

Refuse removal has turned highly political in Diepsloot.

As garbage piles up uncollected a few centimetres away from the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) offices in Diepsloot, allegations have risen that local ANC councillor, Abraham Mabuke, has ordered Pikitup not to collect it.

DA chairperson in Diepsloot, Thabo Phala, claimed that Mabuke said Pikitup won’t remove the rubbish piling up in front of the DA offices. “[Mabuke] told DA chairperson Thabo Phala that Pikitup won’t remove the rubbish because they are in front of a DA office,” said a brief statement which was released by the party.

Numerous efforts to contact Mabuke were futile as his cellphone was off.

Spokesperson for Pikitup, Jacky Mashapu conceded that it would take time before they could clear the waste backlog caused by the five-week strike. “Waste is suggested to be piling up and we did make a public announcement that it might take a bit of time to clear,” said Mashapu.

“We are, however, working around the clock to remove the waste backlog caused by the five-week strike.”

Mashapu, however, dismissed the DA’s allegations as cheap politicking. “Pikitup does not render services based on religion, creed and political affiliation. It is sad to hear the DA playing a political card on waste service issues,” said Mashapu.
