Alleged rapist nabbed by police, awaiting court appearance

DIEPSLOOT - Read up on how a visit to a tavern turns sour for a man accused of rape

A taxi driver who allegedly raped a 26-year-old woman in Lion Park, Muldersdrift, was among 65 suspects caught during Operation Paseka in Diepsloot over the weekend. Paseka means Easter

Diepsloot Police Station spokesman, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, made the announcement in a media statement he released on 3 March. He said the alleged rape took place after the victim boarded a taxi driven by the 35-year-old suspect on Old Pretoria Road in January.

“It is reported that after another passenger had alighted from the taxi, only the victim remained at the mercy of the taxi driver. He [taxi driver] drove to a spot near Lion Park Informal Settlement where the victim was allegedly raped. After the incident, the woman escaped by throwing herself out of the taxi while it was in motion,” said Mavimbela.

According to the spokesperson, the suspect’s luck ran out when his alleged victim spotted him on 2 April in a tavern in Muldersdrift and informed the police. Mavimbela said the suspect was arrested and placed under lock and key on Sunday morning.

A further 64 suspects were arrested for offences ranging from possession of dagga, illegal gambling, possession of unlawful ammunition and fraud. A total of 22 drivers were fined for violating traffic laws. Liquor-related offenders were also not spared the rod, and five non-compliant taverns were closed, and more than 271 litres of beer was seized.

All the arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
