Motorist attacks taxi driver in Fourways

FOURWAYS - A Johannesburg taxi driver was attacked by a motorist for bumping into his car and damaging his side mirror.

According to an eyewitness, Lara Suddes, the incident occurred at about 6.15am on 29 March on the corner of William Nicol and Kingfisher drives in Fourways.

Suddes, who was seated in a Gautrain bus, explained that the taxi driver was attempting to manoeuvre through traffic when he bumped into the side mirror of a silver Hyundai. Both drivers then exited their vehicles and a fight broke out.

Suddes said, “Upon seeing the fight, a woman also seated in the bus, screamed, ‘oh no, that’s my boyfriend’. The woman got off the bus and got in-between the fighting men in an attempt to stop them. At that point, the motorist pulled out a pole to beat up the taxi driver but was stopped by his girlfriend.

“Both men were well dressed and quite violent. It was really horrible to see, and if it wasn’t for the girl the fight may have been worse,” said Suddes.

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale Police Station was unaware of the incident.

Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar described road rage as incidents of angry and aggressive driving that may range from mild displays of anger such as waving of arms or an ugly stare, to physical assault and even death.

Minnaar provided the following tips for motorists:

  •  Always remain calm
  •  Listen to soothing music
  •  Never get involved in an argument with another motorist as you never know what their state of mind is
  •  Walk away from an altercation as the person may be armed
  •  Always remember to share the road with other motorists, pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles etc.

Minnaar urged motorists to report cases of road rage to their nearest police station.
