67 Blankets releases charity anthem

JOHANNESBURG – At first, celebrities pulled out their knitting needles for Madiba – and now they have invested their incredible voices and created a song for the non-profit organisation, 67 Blankets for Mandela.

Every year, thousands of people band together to knit or crochet blankets to warm people around the world, and more importantly, here on the streets of Johannesburg.

This year, a number of talented musicians, including PJ Powers, Timothy Moloi and Proverb lent their voices to create the 67 Blankets Anthem.

The touching lyrics were written by Ella Grealy, who is only 11 years old, as well as two prison inmates, Ntutuzelo Mdingi and Nkosinathi Majola. The music was written by Neill Solomon while Mauritz Lotz composed the arrangement.

Every time the song is downloaded, it will raise money for the 67 Blankets journey and it is available on a number of platforms for just R7.50. Two versions of the anthem are already available while a third is still in the pipeline.

Some of the money raised by the track will go towards having Buskaid play on the third version. Buskaid is an organisation which helps develop the talent of young, black musicians who reside in townships.

67 Blankets is also gearing up to take back its world record for the biggest crocheted blanket, as it was recently taken by India on 22 April.

KnitWits are encouraged to buy the song and attend the 67 Blankets and Lead SA event happening at Steyn City near Sandton on 10 April so that everyone can be filmed singing the new anthem. And already, members of the pubic have fallen in love with the song.

The 67 Blankets anthems are available on iTunes, and those interested in purchasing the song can simply type 67 Blankets into the information box for R7.99 or pay R15.98 for the two versions.

On MTNplay, the song is available for R7.50 and the ringtone is available for R2. The songs are also available on Content Connect Africa .
