Development of K46 proceeds smoothly

DIEPSLOOT - The massive construction project of the K46 road in Diepsloot is progressing smoothly without any hassles.

The more than R500-million project designed to turn the thin stretch of road linking William Nicol Drive and the N14 highway into an eight lane dual-carriage kicked off a month ago.

Public construction projects in Diepsloot have, in the past, been stopped by community members demanding a slice of the value received by tenders.

The construction of a water reservoir project in Tanganani Ext 14 and a school in Ext 2 are still grounded after community members chased constructors from the sites.

The tale is different this time around, however.

Diepsloot councillor, Rodgers Makhubele ruled out any possibility of the constructor being chased off the site by community members.

“There is no tension at all and I don’t think there will be any in future because the constructor is working well with the community,” said Makhubele.

He said local people, women and the disabled were involved in the project as clearly directed by the MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismael Vadi during the soil-turning ceremony held a month ago to mark the commencement of the project.

Ward 93 councillor, Matome Mafokwane expressed the same sentiments.

Mafokwane said the community was working on a guiding document since last weekend with the view of formulating ways of engaging with the constructor.

“A guiding document will help us to engage as a united front with the constructor with one voice. We should have done this long back. The constructor does not have to wait for us as we put our house in order because he has deadlines to meet,” said Mafokwane.

Fourways Review news team visited the site on 15 March. Numerous heavy earth-moving machines were seen crawling on-site. Heavy excavations, massive soil movements and surfacing are the major activities which are currently being rolled out.

Mandla Lubbe, the main constructor, said they had not yet encountered any problem.
