Pikitup workers go on strike again

JOBURG - Pikitup workers upended dustbins and scattered litter around the Joburg CBD on 9 March as part of their illegal strike for salary increases.

Workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union are demanding that their salaries be increased to between R9000 and R10 000 a month.

Pikitup released a statement saying, “This illegal work stoppage will affect refuse collection in all the regions of the City of Johannesburg. Details of the impact and contingency plans will be communicated at a later stage via the Call Centre, Pikitup’s website and social media pages.”

There were reports that the protest had turned violent.

Commuters are urged to steer clear of the Joburg CBD.
