Police caution community against hiring casual labour

FOURWAYS – Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale Police Station, has urged residents not to hire cheap labour from the side of the road.

This comes after a false report circulated on social media, claiming that an unnamed elderly person who, while seeking to employ one casual artisan, was badgered and mobbed by a number of others outside a store in Fourways.

Muthan confirmed that no reports of such an incident had been reported to the Douglasdale Police Station.

Jean Berdou, chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) said, “Notwithstanding the very dubious source of the report… This issue deserves to be carefully looked at.”

He cautioned community members who may decide to hire temporary workers from the side of the road. According to Berdou, the right to freedom of movement, the right to choose who you employ and the right for persons to seek employment, whether casual or permanent, is clearly protected by the Constitution. No one can interfere with that. However, Berdou explained that it would be wise to use persons with verifiable references and pay more rather than gamble with one’s safety.

He added that to expect the CPF, police, security companies or other parties to police choices made by community members to use such temporary labour was nonsensical. “The Douglasdale CPF supports responsible employment and practises and wishes to encourage our community to use diligent discretion, in all matters pertaining to personal safety and that of family,” Berdou added.

“A vigilant, diligent community acting with unity shall defeat crime.”
