Hadeda saved from sky-high tree

FOURWAYS - Helping preserve our wildlife goes a long way.

This after a hadeda was stuck in a tree over seven metres high in the Cedar Square area and was rescued on 14 February.

This is thanks to animal activist and police reservist, Irene McKenzie of the Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education (C.A.R.E) who answered a man’s call for help.

The man was struggling to get someone to help him as the ladder he was using could not reach the hadeda.

“The public was told it was too high to save the hadeda, as ladders couldn’t reach the bird that was hanging by its wing… so somehow someone got hold of my number and called me,” McKenzie said.

“My gardener, Coster Mupaji, who was at work that day, was able to climb the tall Eucalyptus tree with a net in hand to retrieve the poor bird,” she said.

The hadeda was taken for a check-up at the vet the following day and needed food, water and rest in order to heal its bruised wing.

The bird stayed with C.A.R.E for a week and then was transported to Judy Davidson of Wildlife in Crisis based in Springs for further rehabilitation. A volunteer of Friends of Free Wildlife transported the bird.
