Unity College host gala

BROADACRES – Unity College, a school for pupils with delayed scholastic ability, hosted their annual Inter-House Swimming Gala which was held at Crawford Preparatory School in Fourways.

Michelle Kirk, advancement officer for Unity College said, “We are so grateful to Ian Rothman, principal of Crawford Fourways, for allowing us the use of their wonderful swimming pool facility.”

Unity’s pupils were the first to use the school’s brand new pool lane dividers.

Rothman, together with his sports team, also stayed to enjoy the morning with the excited pupils.

With lots of splashing action, the juniors kicked off the gala with a noodle race, kickboard race and dived for coloured sticks.

Teachers Amy Harrison and Monya Oosthuysen also had a few splashes while assisting and encouraging the less able swimmers.

The real fun began when the intermediates and seniors competed in doggie paddle, kickboard, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle races culminating in the extremely exciting finishes of the relay races.

Throughout the gala war cries abounded with the Red Bishops taking the Spirit Trophy for their enthusiasm.

The winning house was Blue Cranes which scored a massive 103 points.

The Yellow Weavers were not far behind with 81 points and the Red Bishops scored 67 points.
