Motorist on William Nicol allegedly harassed by Metro cop

FOURWAYS – Metro police are once again in the spotlight after Fourways resident, Vera Drummond, complained of allegedly being harassed by an officer on 16 February.

According to Drummond’s daughter, Chantal Drummond, Vera was driving along William Nicol Drive when she was stopped by a Metro police officer and allegedly accused of driving on the wrong side of the road.

When Drummond tried to explain that she was forced off the road by a taxi, the officer apparently accused her of shouting, took her driver’s licence, handcuffed her and threatened to issue her with a number of fines.

Drummond was eventually let go with a warning after 30 minutes.

“My mom is still very shocked and frightened from the whole incident,” Chantal said.

Spokesperson for Metro police, Wayne Minnaar, said officers had the authority to pull motorists over and handcuff them, provided motorists were breaking the rules of the road.

Brigadier Lettie Hugo, commander of the Douglasdale Police Station, urged residents to report such incidents to Metro police for investigation.
