Murder gets community mobilised

NORSCOT- With the murder which occurred in the community last week, Douglasdale police and the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) held a community information session regarding crime at Norscot Manor Recreation Centre on 9 February.

During the session, Douglasdale Police Station commander Brigadier Lettie Hugo advised community members about the importance of taking care of their safety when at home.

Hugo mentioned the importance of having a panic button in your home, locking the doors during the evening, checking if alarm systems are properly activated and ensuring that your domestic worker has a legal identity document in order to curb inside jobs.

“I am delighted by the number of people who came to this session and I believe if we work together we can eradicate crime. It is also important for people to know their neighbours and be more observant about their surroundings. We need to work hand in hand as a community,” Hugo said.

The Douglasdale police members emphasised that community members needed to be more vigilant and responsible for their safety and should not create opportunities for criminals to take advantage of.

Chairperson of the Douglasdale CPF, Jean Berdou said, “The response from community members has been outstanding. The sad thing is, it took an incident like this to happen first to get the community to mobilise, but we are delighted with the huge turnout. We can now mobilise a larger portion of our community to assist with community-related issues.”

The community members can rest easy in the knowledge that eradicating crime is of high importance to the police as they were told of crime successes in partnership with security services who routinely patrol the area.

“The turnout was fantastic and thanks to the police for being hands on by calling this session shortly after the incident. People are taking crime seriously and want to get involved so they can improve their safety in their suburb,” said Sector 4 CPF chairman, David Foley.

The session ended with a plea to community members who were interested in being part of the volunteers of the neighbourhood watch.

“Investigations are still ongoing for the Douglasdale murder case as detectives are following up on leads. Identity kits of suspects have been done and no further information is released at the moment,” Berdou concluded.
