Young Stars sink defiant Aces

JOBURG - Norwood Young Stars continued their impressive form as they beat Blue Aces 3-1 in a highly entertaining encounter at Alexandra Stadium.

Aces looked the more enterprising side in the opening phases of the game and should have taken the lead in the fifth minute when Lehlohonolo Buthelezi failed to convert with only the keeper to beat.

Young Stars goalkeeper Munjeeb Abimbola produced a brilliant one-handed save to keep his team in the game in the 15th minute to deny William Thomba the opener.

Aces were made to rue their missed chances when Stars’ Shadrack Opare broke the deadlock two minutes before the break. Opare received a crispy pass from Osi Miniru and thumped home a thunderous shot into the bottom left corner.

Young Stars came out blazing in the second half as they searched for a second goal. However, it was Aces who leveled matters in the 56th minute from a set piece which deflected off a Young Stars defender and caught the keeper flat footed.

The game looked to be heading for a draw, but Stars showed their class as they piled on the pressure and were rewarded for their efforts when Ezenwa Chintaka slotted home from close range.

The goal seemed to take the stuffing out of Aces, and Stars capitalised in the 84th minute when Solomon Akinjisola pipped the Aces keeper to make it 3-1.

Young Stars captain, Opare, was delighted with his team’s perfomance, as they won their fourth game of the season to stay on top of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Promotional League.

“I would first like to thank God for this victory, it was not an easy game for us but I am happy that we won,” said Opare.

“The boys put in a great performance.”
