BRYANSTON – Three Bryanston youngsters came back with awards after they participated in the A+ Students by CMATHS, a whole-brain development course otherwise known as Calculating Mental Arithmetic Tuition.

A gold award was presented to Bryanston’s Le Roux Heyneke, while Ethan Bester and Karla van der Westhuysen walked away with a silver award.

The course sent a total of 28 youngsters to represent South Africa at the 15th Pama Global Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition in San Francisco in the United State of America and they came back with a total of two champion awards, two gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze awards.

Pama Global Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition is an international competition where young mathematicians compete against one another in intense mental challenges. The purpose of the competition is to acknowledge the different forms of mental arithmetic skills from all countries, promote abacus and mental arithmetic education, and develop friendships among contestants from around the world.

The champion awards went to arithmetic genius brothers, Stiaan and Louis Scheepers. The second gold award went to 12-year-old Ethan Kirstein. The eight silver awards went to Nesia Chetty, Michaela Kapnias, Emile Kleynhans, Alexander Greenan, Elizabeth Ruth de Bruin, Luca Plekker, Jarav Maharaj and Janushka Moodely from Midrand.

A total of 225 students from around the world contended in the competition. “This is a dream that didn’t seem attainable a few years ago,” said Marlene Mouton, chief executive officer of A+ Students by CMATHS.

“The growth and achievement of our students are so overwhelming and exciting, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
