SA road stats to be released

JOBURG - As the festive season winds down, the country anxiously awaits the road statistics from the silly season.

The December holiday is a festive time but, unfortunately, also a dangerous one as thousands of motorists make their way to and from holiday destinations across the country.

The increased number of motor vehicles on the road during this time brings a rise in vehicle and pedestrian accidents.

It was reported by Wheels24 that the number of fatalities as of 21 December has exceeded 500 during this 2015/2016 festive season.

With no official statistics having been released by the Road Traffic Management Corporation thus far, motorists have been urged by the corporation to stay safe on the roads as they make their way back home.

The statistics regarding the official number of accidents and fatalities is set to be released once the verification and validation process has been completed, following the official end of the festive season.

City Press reported, “Although the Road Traffic Management Corporation claims that the death toll has been declining over the years, the reality remains that an average of 40 people has been dying every day on the roads during the Christmas and New Year period since 2010.”
