NSPCA speaks out against animal cruelty

PAULSHOF - The National Council of SPCA's recently sent out a warning to  anyone who thinks it is okay to shoot at birds.

This comes after a case was reported of a man shooting and ultimately killing a hadeda in Paulshof.
According to reports, an elderly man shot the bird at around 5pm on 14 November.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “He shot at the animal twice… the first shot shattered the birds wing and the second shot broke its leg.”
The bird was then put down the following day due to its injuries.
Isabel Wentzel, manager of the Wildlife Protection Unit at the NSPCA, explained that it was illegal to discharge a firearm, an antique firearm or an airgun in a built-up area or any public space without good reason to do so.
Wentzel, added that the man could also face charges of cruelty to animals if found guilty.
Wentzel urged parents not to buy their children pellet guns, and to educate them that shooting animals or any living organism was against the law, especially without a permit.
