Magaliessig residents urged to take part in security initiative

MAGALIESSIG – Following the installation of 10 CCTV cameras in Fourways, security concerns topped the agenda at the Magalissig Action Forum (MAF) meeting on 16 November.

Chairperson of MAF, Mary Hanna said, “It’s a huge step forward, but in many ways also a very disappointing one.”

Hanna explained that despite Magaliessig comprising more than 1 000 households, only 218 residences had contributed to the security project.

“We all have to travel on the streets, but the uptake is dismal… It’s people who don’t participate that shout first when something goes wrong,” she said.

Hanna urged community members to participate in making their homes a safer place.

Vasili Vacratsas, senior sales executive of RSS Security, who heads the project, urged South Africans to stop being complacent and rather take personal and household security in their own hands.

Vascratsas explained that even though there were 12 active cameras in the area, there were still areas that the cameras were not reaching.

“Crime rates are climbing all the time, the more cameras we have up, the safer it is,” he said.

Vascratsas explained that all cameras were monitored by professionals around the clock, and residents residing in complexes would also benefit.
