Alleged Diepsloot baby-seller charged with child traffiking

DIEPSLOOT - A Diepsloot woman has been charged with child trafficking after allegedly "selling" two children to a Mpumalanga couple three years ago.

This according to The Citizen.

Raisible Jacqueline “Mama Jackie” Ramohlola (62), who was once praised for her work with abandoned children, plead not-guilty to charges of child trafficking, fraud and running an unregistered child care centre in contravention of a court order.

The state alleged that Ramohlola advertised that she had children up for adoption and fraudulently created the impression that she had authorisation from the social development department to arrange adoptions.

In 2012 she allegedly “sold” a six-year-old boy and infant girl to a Mpumalanga couple for R30 000.

The children’s “adoptive” father testified on 16 November at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria that he and his wife had asked Ramohlola for help after their efforts to adopt children through various Johannesburg adoption agencies were unsuccessful.

The “adoptive” father said Ramohlola told them they had to pay R30 000 if they wanted the children before they fetched them on their second visit.

The couple took the children home to Mpumalanga without any documentation.

After approaching the KwaMhlanga Magistrates’ Court for assistance with documentation, they realised that they had not undergone a formal adoption process.

The children have since been placed in foster care with the couple.

Ramohlola denied selling the children and said she had been taking care of abandoned children since 1996, she claims many were referred to her by police.

According to Ramohlola, she warned the couple that it was unlawful to buy children, but insisted that the couple donate R30 000 to her care centre and said the two children could visit with the couple.

She claimed that the couple failed to return the children after their visit and said she laid a child theft charge against them.
