200 community members help clean-up

WITKOPPEN - About 200 community members came together to pick up litter on William Nicol Drive outside of Leaping Frog Shopping Centre, Fourways Crossing Shopping Centre and from under the Witkoppen bridge.

Susan Mottram, who is a director of Future City Fourways (FCF), an area improvement initiative, said it was amazing how many community members came together and filled about 1 000 bags of litter on a Saturday morning in 34 degree heat. She added that it spoke volumes about how the public felt about the wave of filth that was threatening to swamp Fourways.

“The public responded overwhelmingly to FCF’s appeal for support of the clean-up, and 12 bakkie’s were loaded as well as two skips of rubbish were collected and removed,” Mottram added.

The clean-up involved various organisations such as ER24, Metro police, police, security companies that patrol in the area, Dougasdale CPF and representatives of shops in the area, to name a few.

Advocate Jean Berdou, also an FCF director said, “FCF extends a massive thank you to all those who supported the clean-up.

“The South African Police Service conducted anti-crime operations that led to the apprehension of a person dealing in narcotics. Metro police issued various bylaw notices, confiscated illegal goods and removed scores of street pole signs that did not comply with council’s outdoor advertising bylaws.”
