Emergency app keeps Lonehill residents safe

LONEHILL – The much anticipated location-based emergency application, mySOS was finally launched in Lonehill.

Designed to provide assistance in emergency situations, the application provides users with the correct contact details for emergency services, and informs their emergency contacts of their emergency and GPS location.

According to Greg Woolard, sales and marketing executive for the company, mySOS offers clients access to appropriate emergency assistance when they don’t know who to call; don’t know where they are; want to notify their emergency contacts about an emergency and their exact location or want their emergency contacts and their emergency services to navigate directly to their location in an emergency.

Founded in 2013, the application already has 28 000 users nationally with 700 being from Lonehill.

The application is divided into three basic tabs, namely Emergency, Find Near Me and Track Me.

  •  The Emergency feature offers users a list of contact details for the closest and most appropriate emergency service providers based on the nature of the emergency ie medical, police, sea, rescue or roadside assistance
  •  The Find Near Me feature boasts more than 20 000 service providers in South Africa, divided into different categories, such as doctors, dentists, veterinary services, and pharmacies to name a few. This feature allows users to contact and navigate to the nearest service provider for the service needed
  •  The Track Me feature allows the application to track your movement, particularly if you are driving somewhere alone or for those early morning rides or runs.

Woolard said, “Set the countdown timer before you start and mySOS will track you. If anything happens and you do not clear the timer before it runs out, your emergency contacts will be notified about your journey details and current location.”

Although the app is available free to all, Lonehill residents have the additional advantage of three unique dynamic emergency buttons linked to Fidelity Security Services, SLA Paramedics and the Lonehill Residents’ Association.

Kelly Braum of the association said, “Should a resident experience an emergency in Lonehill, they will be able to contact any of the service providers by pressing the dynamic button of the relevant emergency service provider. At the same time the resident’s exact position will be sent to the emergency service provider as well as the resident’s personal emergency contacts.”

Braum urged residents in the greater Lonehill area to download the app, adding that should the three dynamic emergency buttons not be visible, residents can e-mail admin@lra.org.za for assistance.

The mySOS is available free of charge, from the App Store and Google Play for iOS and android users.
