Cops and security team up against smash-and-grabs

MIDRAND - Midrand police, together with security companies, have stationed security guards on New Road, Waterfall Corner, the R55, Summit Road and Maxwell Drive to monitor the roads due to an increase in smash-and-grabs.

Midrand police spokesperson, Constable Matome Tlamela said, “Ria Sebetsa Security Services, ADT Security and 7 Arrows Security have been posted on the identified roads. The companies are posted from 6pm till 9pm. Recently, police have noticed that the time smash-and-grab incidents are committed has shifted to 10pm, so police will continue with visibility thereafter.”

Tlamela explained that police will continue to work on this social responsibility programme as there had been a noticeable reduction in smash-and-grabs in those areas due to the visibility of these security companies.

Danny Maduray, chief executive officer of Ria Sebetsa Security, said while there has been great support on social media for the work the security companies were doing to curb smash-and-grabs, there were some people on New Road who have not been receptive to the presence of these companies.

“Security companies are working with police to help stop smash-and-grabs. The community needs to treat security companies with respect, as we are there to protect motorists from smash-and-grabs,” said Maduray.
