Dainfern Lions Football club awards players at end of season

DAINFERN- Dainfern Lions Football Club held an end of season prize-giving at Dainfern Golf Estate.

The club’s senior team comprising players aged 19 and older, was awarded with the Auto and General Insurance floating trophy for the Club Senior team of the year.

The little league prize for the best overall team of the year went to the U9 team which won all their games and finished top of their league.

Chairperson of the club, Nic Papas, congratulated the players on their achievement.

The club has players from the age of four, called the Dainfern Cubs, right up to the age of 55, called the Vets.

Most of the players come from the Diepsloot township and Auto and General supports the club as part of their CSI Social Upliftment Programme. Players can also seek advice and assistance in putting together a professional CV and employment opportunities.

Papas said the Dainfern Football management team was not only passionate about the beautiful game, but believed strongly in social upliftment and giving back to the community.

“The club continues to grow each year and a huge thank you to Auto and General, Mark White Nissan and Contract Car and Truck Hire, which are the club’s sponsors, for each contributing to the major success of the club,” he said.

“We are very fortunate to have them as partners, they have given hope in more ways than one to our players, especially from neighbouring Diepsloot.”

The club, which is situated within the golf estate, is unique as it offers a safe and secure environment for all children to enjoy league games every Saturday and Sunday. The teams compete in the Rand Central Football League and the club has a membership of about 400.

“The club is not only for the residents of Dainfern, we do allow neighbouring estates to join in,” Papas said.

Registration for next year’s season will open in mid-January.
