Two men bust after robbing soccer players at gunpoint

DOUGLASDALE - Two suspects have been arrested after they allegedly robbed a group of soccer players at gunpoint in Douglasdale on 14 September.

The men apparently approached the players on a field at Kings College and Prep School situated on the corner of Hornbill and Church roads, and demanded their cellphones.
According to Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, spokesperson for Douglasdale police, the victims were not hurt during the robbery. He said one of the victims, who still had his cellphone with him, contacted the police who reacted quickly.
“We managed to track the cellphone [of one of the victims] and arrested the two suspects at the Engen garage on Malibongwe Drive together with the unlicensed firearm,” Muthan said.
The suspects aged 42 and 28 were arrested with the help of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum.
A representative of the school who did not want to be named said the victims of the robbery were members of an external soccer club who were not affiliated to the school. The representative added that the incident took place at about 8.10pm.
