Taxi driver back in court for dragging Lonehill resident

LONEHILL - A taxi driver who is accused of knocking down a woman and dragging her under his taxi is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates' Court on 4 September.

The dragging incident occurred in Lonehill in 2011.

Advocate Kim McCusker had been on her way to gym with her fiance, Lourens Grobler when the taxi driver, Matome Thamage almost struck the back of their car. The three of them became involved in an altercation and Thamage sped off.

Thamage claimed to have left the scene to flee an assault by Grobler and said he did not know McCusker was under his taxi.

McCusker was dragged under Thamage’s vehicle for 700 metres. Thamage was arrested and charged with attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving but has plead ‘not guilty’ to these charges.

According to News24, he is also facing a string of other charges, including driving without a licence, driving without a valid permit, failing to stop immediately after an accident and failing to ascertain the injuries of an accident victim.

In November last year a similar incident occurred at the corner of William Nicol and Sandton Drives, where a teacher was dragged under another motorist’s vehicle. She had stopped to swap insurance details with the motorist after a minor collision but he fled the scene, dragging her under his vehicle.
