Gauteng Premier to walk to work

JOBURG - Be on the lookout for a well-known person who will be walking to work as soon as William Nicol Drive's pedestrian lanes get constructed. The pedestrian will be none other than David Makhura, Premier of the Gauteng Government.

Makhura expressed his desire to walk or cycle to work during the launch of the R300-million William Nicol Drive’s dual carriageway.

“I would love to walk or cycle to work, but our roads have no provision for pedestrians or cyclists, but the upgrades being implemented on William Nicol will provide cycle and footways,” said Makhura.

He said his office was located very far from his home, but added that walking or cycling would be healthy for him.

“People think that travelling by car every day is good, and walking or cycling is for the poor,” said Makhura.

He added that rich people admired those who walked all the time. “This explains why they frequent gyms to make their bodies work and to burn fat,” said Makhura, which drew laughter from the audience.

The premier urged people who work close to their homes to walk or cycle to work.
