Region A’s streets receive touch-ups

JOBURG - The Johannesburg Roads Agency will, in the current financial year, spend a significant portion of Region A’s R24-million maintenance budget on ensuring that streets are maintained and street names in its various suburbs, townships and commercial areas are clear and visible.

The agency’s acting managing director, Mpho Kau, said the agency has a responsibility to ensure that residents find their way around their neighbourhoods easily.

Kau added, “A lot of street names in our areas are not visibly displayed. That is why we are painting or repainting the street names on the kerb where necessary.”

In the past financial year, the agency has completed the repainting of street names in areas such as Lonehill and Sunninghill.

Some of Region A’s areas that will benefit from this drive in the 2015 to 2016 financial year are Rabie Ridge, Ebony Park, Ivory Park and Kaalfontein. Region A includes urban centres such as Dainfern, Farmall and Chartwell and a number of informal settlements, as well as robust commercial areas around Lanseria and Grand Central Airport and in the Midrand CBD.

Kau also said the entity will invest at least R41 million of its capital expenditure budget for the current financial year in road reconstruction projects, improvement of the general state of the roads in highly populated areas, as well as gravel roads in agricultural areas.

Some of the approved projects include:

  •  Improvement of the general state of the roads in Diepsloot’s wards 77 and 95 worth R6 million
  •  R15 million road reconstruction in Ivory Park
  •  Conversion of open storm water channels into underground systems in Ivory Park worth R10 million
  •  Erosion protection in the Fourways area
  •  Upgrading of gravel roads and storm water drainage systems in Kaalfontein for R3 million
  •  Pedestrian bridges planning in Ivory Park and Diepsloot for R1 million each.

The projects are expected to provide jobs to locals who will be employed as workers and subcontractors. The agency is continuing its work on the R10-million, three-year maintenance and rehabilitation project of the widening of Le Roux Avenue in Ward 112.

Phase 1 has already been completed with the construction of the bridge over the N1; and on the R5-million gravel roads reconstruction programme in agricultural holdings which was launched last year, is currently 43 percent complete.

“The agency also plans to finalise the R25-million roads reconstruction and rehabilitation programme of which currently 85 percent is complete, and the comprehensive roads resurfacing programme in 12 wards,” said Kau.

The managing director also urged members of the public to bear with the agency during the construction and rehabilitation of roads in the region which, he said, will help alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow in the region. The projected total expenditure for these projects over three years from last year to next year is R150 million.
