We don’t want taxi rank here

A concerned resident writes:

Residents in the… areas around Fourways Mall are extremely concerned that there is going to be a taxi rank on Roos Street. Ground is currently being leveled at the Fourways Boulevard intersection leading to Fourways Mall.

This will become the site of a taxi rank for the next 20 months at least, and all the taxis from the presently contained Game store will be moved to this new area.

A red robot to taxi drivers means that they may proceed. Any hooting from other motorists gets met with the usual leaning out the window and a middle finger. They stop wherever they want to pick up passengers, cutting off motorists in the process, and park on the pavements with their vehicle halfway in the road, causing traffic backups.

Road rage with taxis in the area is already… [rife], and now they will be brought into a main feeder road that is already busy at peak hour.

The Sunninghill taxi area is a case in point with all the chaos that they are experiencing.

A residential/office park area is no place for a taxi rank, especially at an already dangerous main intersection. At the very least, the entrance should be changed to the quieter Short Street (Intercare/Clicks), however, the residents of Hawthorne Estate have already voiced their disapproval.

We appreciate the fact that the Fourways Mall area and surrounds are being upgraded by the Accelerate Property Group and this will definitely benefit the area. However, residents of the affected area cannot be expected to accept two years of lawless behaviour and chaos that will come with the taxis in Roos Street.

Of course, there is the bigger picture in the long term, but any property owners wishing to sell within the next two years will also be affected.

How many buyers will want a taxi rank right on their doorstep?
