‘I would rather ride naked…’

CHARTWELL – Showjumpers of Team Nissan braved the cold, naked, to celebrate International Helmet Awareness Day when they swapped their clothes for helmets to show support for the cause.

Founded in 2010 after Olympic dressage rider Courtney King-Dye was seriously injured in a riding accident, the day is held each year on 1 August, and has now become a global event with a number of countries participating each year.

Team Nissan member, Lorette Knowles-Taylor said after losing a friend to a bad fall and her own one, she realised how important it was to always wear a helmet when riding. “My whole attitude towards wearing helmets has changed,” she said.

Knowles-Taylor, who landed in an intensive care unit from a bad fall some years ago, stressed the importance of head safety, and explained that a good helmet fitted well, and wasn’t too tight or too loose.

The campaign stresses the importance of headgear with the catch phrase, I would rather ride naked than with no helmet.
