Recover stolen goods with marking technology

SANDTON – The Sandton Community Police Forum has partnered with AssetDot, a home asset marking kit supplier, to make the recovery of stolen goods easier for the Sandton police.

AssetDot has entered into an agreement whereby R30 of each kit sold within the Sandton policing precinct will be donated to the forum.

With the number of property crimes in the area, AssetDot has proposed an additional way for Sandton residents to protect their belongings with a proven technology for home use.

This technology comprises a pen which contains 3 000 microdots, with a serial number unique to that pen which is enough to mark up to 40 assets. Every pen is registered to the purchaser, and thus each marked asset is easily identified.

The police have not only been trained on how to use the product, but have also been issued with a police detection kit which enables them to identify marked assets.

“This effectively eliminates the market for stolen goods as true ownership becomes immediately known to the police, and thus goods marked in this fashion are less desirable to take,” said Josh Blumberg, a director at AssetDot.

Residents who are interested in this technology will have access to the home asset marking kits which are designed to make everyday policing more effective, enabling asset recovery and criminal prosecution.

“Statistically, in areas where the technology has been applied and warning signs have been put up saying loud and clear that assets on the property have been fitted with microscopic marking devices, intrusion rates have gone down drastically as the would-be perpetrator knows that the assets in that household would be difficult, if not impossible to sell,” explained Blumberg.
