130 Diepsloot pupils roll out greening projects

DIEPSLOOT - Awards were given to 130 school pupils from Diepsloot, who graduated with certificates of recognition for greening awareness projects in the settlement from a local Roots & Shoots learning programme.

The programme is part of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, a youth-led community action and learning programme by the Jane Goodall Institute.

The graduation was held in the populous township where 60 high school and 70 primary school pupils walked away with certificates of recognition.

“The programme has been running for four months at Father Louise Blondel Youth Centre, and the practical activities have been running at their schools which include Basa Primary School, Diepsloot Combined School, Rabasotho Combined School, Diepsloot Secondary School and Diepsloot Primary School. The graduations were held at Father Louise Blondel Youth Centre,” said school public relations manager, Lebo Mantsho.

The 130 pupils are now recognised ambassadors for greening projects. Mantsho said the ceremony was to honour and recognise the hard work of participants who raised greening awareness in their schools. Benjamin Nkoana and Nonhlanhla Mabunda were singled out as the best students for outstanding work in their communities.

Speaking during the graduation, Semelani Sizani of Diepsloot Primary School, urged pupils to look after their environment.
