Lanseria residents reportedly blame firefighters’ go-slow for house burning down

LANSERIA – According to a report, Lanseria residents believe the City’s firefighters’ refusal to work overtime without extra pay led to a house burning down on 18 July.

Eyewitness News is reporting that a Lanseria resident made an emergency call to alert firefighters that his neighbour’s plot was on fire, but then discovered from a colleague that the fire department said firefighters were on a “go-slow” and could not assist straight away.

The report went on to say when the firefighters arrived at the property, they were ill-equipped.

One of the residents believes if the response time had of been quicker, some of the house could have been saved.

Meanwhile the City’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the actions taken by firefighters to start their shift at 8am and leave their stations at 4pm constitutes a breach of contract and a change of conditions of service.

Mulaudzi said, “We therefore regard this conduct as an unprotected strike because the issues concerned are being dealt with at the Arbitration and Bargaining Council.”
