A week of success for police

DOUGLASDALE – Douglasdale police were proud to announce the prosecution of two suspects who were charged with aggravated robbery.

Staff of the popular Fourways entertainment venue were locking up the establishment shortly after 3am on 4 April when they were approached by three armed suspects.

“The suspects proceeded to rob the venue of R32 000 in cash, two cellphones and a laptop,” confirmed spokesperson for the station, Warrant Officer Balan Muthan.

“During preliminary investigations conducted within days of the crime being committed, our detective Constable Thabo Selekedi viewed footage of the crime and interviewed complainants,” Muthan continued.

“On that same day, Selekedi arrested two suspects in connection with the robbery.”

Muthan added that R15 000 in cash, the stolen cellphones and the laptop were found in their possession.

“Both suspects appeared at Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 3 July and were convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and each of them was sentenced to 15 years in prison,” said Muthan.

Meanwhile, Douglasdale police held a joint crime prevention operation within the precinct on 2 July following numerous complaints from local residents regarding vagrants and other individuals walking around aimlessly in the suburbs.

“Various stop and searches were conducted in all sectors, although no arrests were made,” said Muthan. “We would like the members of our community to be aware that not all vagrants have criminal intentions.”

The station commander for Douglasdale Police Station, Brigadier Lettie Hugo shared her views on current crime trends throughout the precinct.

“Statistics for June/July have been stable so far,” stated Hugo. “The most problematic issue for us at this stage is incidents of smash-and-grabs.”

She added that this type of crime could be decreased if motorists kept their valuables out of sight.
