JOBURG - Get out your favourite pens and your drawing skills for a doodle session with a great cause.
Many of us know the feeling of doodling aimlessly on our notepads during a lecture, class or boring meeting, and now the creators of Night of 1000 Doodles is giving bored doodlers the chance to put their artistic pieces to good use.
Night of 1000 Doodles was started in Johannesburg in 2006 as a way to raise money for charity by allowing the public to create art pieces that would be auctioned off at reasonable prices throughout the night.
This event happens once a year and this year, the proceeds will go to a non-profit educational initiative, The Streetlight Schools.
The non-profit organisation aims to open affordable primary schools and assists in improving teaching practices, modern skill development and provides access to technology in a manner that is as cost-effective as possible.
“This is such a great showing of community coming out and supporting each other,” said Kelly McGillivray of Night of 1000 Doodles. “It’s fantastic to see people of all races, creeds and colours, drawing and inspiring together and ultimately showing up on the night to have a good time.
“And we’re all here for the same reason – to make a difference for the kids of the future.”
Leading up to the event, the company hosted a number of doodle sessions during which they invited the public to a selected venue and created art using any design element from embroidery to oil art.
The art is created on A5 paper with each piece being donated towards Night of 1000 Doodles.
The doodle sessions, or doodle-do’s as they are called, are not just for creating art, but also for socialising and grabbing a few drinks with friends.
