Bryanston pair rapidly rising in canoeing

BRYANSTON - SANDTON residents and novice canoeists, Cobus Wagner and Marlise Swanepoel were impressive as they managed to cruise successfully through the rapids in their first river race.

The 22km river race was between Meyerton and Three Rivers on the Klip River and was hosted by Florida Lake Canoe Club.

Wagner and Swanepoel competed in the mixed double combination category and managed to complete the race in just under two hours.

They are members of the canoe club based at Emmarentia Dam.

Jennie Dallas, spokesperson for the Gauteng Canoe Union explained the significance of completing this race for canoeists.

“Those who took part and finished are able to earn points towards A grade status to be able to compete in their first A grade river race, the Fish River Marathon in October,” she said.

Dallas added that more than 100 paddlers took part in the race, with novice racers using it as a way to hone their skills ahead of the upcoming river marathon.
