UPDATE: Lioness which attacked American tourist will not be put down

JOBURG - It is believed that an American tourist has been killed by a lion at a local lion park.

UPDATE: 2 June 2015, 6.45 am – The lioness which attacked an American tourist at The Lion Park will not be put down.

According to Timeslive the animal will instead be moved away from its pride and will no longer interact with visitors at the park.

Assistant operations manager for the park, Scott Simpson reportedly said the lioness will be moved to another property where the park keeps other wildlife.

 

UPDATE: 1 June 2015, 7:30pm – Following the death of a female American tourist who was killed while driving through the Lion Park, twitter has erupted regarding the incident.

INITIAL REPORT: 1 June 2015, 15:56pm – According to reports, it is believed an American tourist has been mauled to death by a lion at a lion park just outside Joburg in Honeydew.

Reports state that two people were travelling in a vehicle with their windows open.

The lion managed to gain entry to the vehicle and killed the woman who was believed to be in the passenger seat while the driver has been left seriously injured.

According to Scott Simpson, the operations manager at the lion park, the woman, believed to be in her 40s, died at the scene after emergency services arrived.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and tried to resuscitate the woman, however, their attempts proved futile.

The lion from the park has been locked up in an enclosure following the incident.

Simpson added, “This is not a common occurrence. We have plenty of signage at the park indicating that windows should always be closed while driving in the lion park. Brochures are handed out to all of the tourists who visit the park”
