Celebrate International Hamburger Day with Spur

JOHANNESBURG – Who would have thought that the idea of putting a meat patty into a bun would have evolved into the world’s easiest and tastiest form of food?

It is International Hamburger Day … a day to celebrate these meaty bundles of joy. We’ll bet you didn’t know that the hamburger is not much more than 100 years old.

With the annual International Hamburger Day, thousands of hamburger festivals are hosted every year. On 13 October 1985 Spur Steak Ranches set an incredible Guinness World Record for the Mega Burger. The burger weighed 2270.66 kg and fed over 15 000 people!

Spur still honours the hamburger and will celebrate International Hamburger Day by distributing Spur burgers to various radio stations around the country. In addition, the Spur Foundation will deliver Spur burgers to a number of children’s charities around the country, including Umnqophiso Pre Primary in Cape Town, the Bochela Centre in Bloemfontein, Bellavista in Joburg, Inn Safe Hands in Port Elizabeth and the Durban Children’s Home.

Spur branches around the country sell close to 1 million burgers every month. That’s about 12 million a year! And obviously, a large percentage of these are sold on Mondays, when Spur offers it’s famously delicious buy one, get one free burger special.

Even the carb-conscious will find a burger to suit their needs because Spur has developed a nutritional mobisite: www.spur.co.za/nutrition. A full nutritional analysis of each item on the menu is provided, along with a kilojoule count, giving customers the control to decide exactly what they eat and choose the best options for their families.
