Sadag to host bipolar talks in June

JOBURG - WITH National Bipolar Awareness Day around the corner, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group will host various talks about bipolar disorder.

One of the talks will take place in Parktown on 26 May and will see guest speaker Dr Antoinette Miric take questions from audience members in an Ask the Doctor session.
Meryl da Costa, press liaison officer at Sadag, explained that the group would host 18 talks throughout the country, all highlighting the issue.
“These talks are open to the public, whether you are personally affected by bipolar or you know someone affected by it,” she said.
Da Costa added that the group would also host talks in Melville and Northriding, in addition to hosting an online Facebook chat on their page next week.
Bipolar disorder is the sixth leading cause of disability in the world, and over one million South Africans suffer from this medical illness which requires treatment and support.
Psychiatrist Dr Lei Jh Janet added that with bipolar, patients often need guidance and support in understanding what their diagnosis means, what their treatment entails and what medication they are taking and why.
“Bipolar patients, their loved ones and colleagues need to gain insight into this illness and start recognising patterns of behaviour and mood change.”
A bipolar talk will take place on 2 June at 7.30pm at the Parkhurst Recreation Centre.

Details: For more information on the talk and how to book your seat, contact Sadag on 0800 21 22 23.
