The first arrests were made after reservists from Douglasdale Police Station were doing their usual patrols and noticed a vehicle being driven recklessly, Warrant Officer Balan Muthan of the station said.

“Our reservists further observed the suspects and noticed how they attempted to swap banking cards at an outside ATM at a shopping centre in Bryanston,” he said.

The license plate was run through the police database and found to belong to another vehicle. Police members from the station and security company Londoloza were called to respond.

Officials continued to follow the suspects who then stopped at a garage in Douglasdale and went inside the shop, Londoloza spokesperson Danielle Dooley further elaborated.

“The reservists and security guards moved in towards the entrance, but were noticed by the suspects who then ran to their vehicle and tried to get away,” said Dooley.

A shot was fired into the radiator of the suspects’ vehicle, causing them to come to a halt. Three suspects were then arrested by Douglasdale police officers.

“In the vehicle, police found several credit cards, a large knife, drugs and other items,” added Doodley.

“This is a wanted vehicle in Douglasdale for scamming and other crimes linked to three separate cases in the Douglasdale Saps area.”

An investigation and linking of cases continues.

In a separate incident on the day, three other suspects were arrested for attempting to shoplift R3 000 worth of goods from a hardware store in Lonehill.
