Switched off for an hour

WATERFALL CITY - Forget load shedding, City Lodge guests and staff were happy to switch off by choice to support the Earth Hour initiative.

Member hotels in the City Lodge Hotel group across the country, which includes City Lodge in Pineslopes Waterfall City, did their bit for Earth Hour on 28 March by switching off most of their lights and resorting to candlelight.

Earth Hour was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage more than 162 countries worldwide. The concept of Earth Hour is to switch off between 8.30pm and 9.30pm to reduce greenhouse emissions around the globe.

City Lodge staff and guests got in on the action and celebrated the worldwide commitment of saving energy.

According to Angus MacMillan of City Lodge, even when the lights are on, the hotel group utilises energy-efficient LED bulbs and movement sensors to reduce the amount of power it pulls from the national electricity grid.
