Unity pupils shop till they drop

BROADACRES - Pupils from Unity College were taken on a shopping trip to learn important aspects of independent living.

Unity College is a special needs school in Broadacres for pupils with learning difficulties and developmental delay.

According to Michelle Kirk of the college, the shopping trips occur once a term and this time the junior department visited Checkers Pinelsopes. They were tasked with matching their visual shopping list to the items in the shop to encourage incidental reading. The pupils were encouraged to interact with the staff and public in a socially acceptable way.

Kirk said this type of outing incorporated hands on learning with practical tasks such as dealing with money. “Thank you Checkers Pineslopes for your patience and assistance with our pupils on their first shopping outing of the year,” Kirk said.
