A healthy dose of bylaw education

DIEPSLOOT - Creche owners were given a crash course in health and safety bylaws by City of Joburg's Department of Environmental Health.

According to Calvin Motsisi of the department, they decided to educate creche owners on an ongoing basis as they would be able to impart the same education to the children in their schools.

Environmental health practitioner Sonja du Plooy gave a presentation on food safety. Du Plooy covered topics such as food poisoning and hygiene while preparing foods. Motsisi educated the creche owners on lead poisoning, and warned them that it was not safe to allow children to play alongside a busy road as they would be exposed to lead emissions from vehicles.

Colleague Sarah Cilo ran through the various building bylaws, and explained to creche owners how to get their facilities registered. She also discussed the regulations for how age groups should be grouped, and what the ratio of children per caregiver should be.
