A hard day’s work for school pupils

BROADACRES - The Grade Rs of Broadacres Farm Nursery School got to experience what it was like to be a butcher, baker and restaurateur at the Broadacres Spar.

The Grade Rs, who are also known as the Wise Owls, were taken to the back of Spar’s restaurant on their arrival.

They got to observe the process of frying chips and then moved to the pastry section where they made their own pizzas. They learnt about the correct oven temperature and the correct use of ingredients.

Their next stop was the butchery where they all got to sample dry wors.

The pupils were also given a tour of the bakery, dairy and cold beverage sections of the store. In the bakery, long tables were set out for pupils to use piping bags to decorate biscuits.

All the pupils had pocket money and each pupil had to choose a specific aisle where they could gather items to spend their money on. They experienced the process of payment and the receiving of change.

Lee-Ann Bruce, principal of the school said she was overwhelmed by the way in which the pupils were received by the staff at Spar. She was impressed by the exemplary organisation and structure applied to each activity and dedicated approach of all the staff to the practice of learning. “The greatest learning is always achieved through the use of all our senses and through active participation, and Broadacres Spar certainly ensured that this happened,” she said.
